Isolates Bottlenecks
LANTest is a comprehensive PC-LAN test suite that quickly isolates the bottlenecks on LANs and
WANs which result in poor workstation performance. The test software runs on any DOS or
Windows based PC, guiding the user through a series of tests that identify a wide range of
problems and suggest possible solutions.
LANTest is much easier to use than expensive network analyzers that can effectively isolate
packet and protocol problems but largely ignore workstation performance. LANTest
benchmarks all of the network subsystems that affect workstation performance including CPU,
Memory, I/O, LAN or WAN segments, routers and file servers.
Interprets Results
The LANTest software is comprised of four tests that work together to isolate bottlenecks that
rob workstations of good network performance.
LANTest graphs and charts to compare current network performance either with data from
previous tests or with sample data included on the LANTest diskette. LANTest also provides
an integrated Windows help system that describes the various tests and explains how to interpret
the results.
Test Components
CPUTest
CPUTest checks raw CPU performance as well as memory and I/O port access speed. A test is
also performed to measure interrupt latency which can invisibly rob workstations of network
performance.
SegTest
SegTest isolates the speed of the Network Interface Card and the local LAN segment from other
components that affect workstation performance. SegTest also tests smart hubs and routers which
can prevent individual nodes from accessing the full bandwidth of a local network segment.
ISegTest
ISegTest runs between any two nodes on the network to measure the inter-segment delays caused
by introducing routers and bridges between workstations and servers. ISegTest is the first
application of its kind to test for these delays. Such delays are all too often lumped in with poor file
server performance and lead to costly upgrades with no increase in performance.
FileBench
FileBench provides a total performance test of the PC file system either across the network to a file
server or to a local hard disk system. Caches and other forms of optimization are included as part
of the benchmark allowing the user to make changes, then re-test to maximize performance.
System Requirements
The basic system requirements necessary to use LANTest are:
- IBM PC-Compatible System
- PC Compatible Network Card
- IPX or NetBEUI/NetBIOS
- DOS 3.0 or Greater
- Windows Module Requires Windows 3.1 with 4MB RAM
Saves Time and Money
LANTest takes only a few minutes to perform, but it provides users with the information necessary to
intelligently upgrade networks and improve workstation performance. The data gathered by LANTest
allows users to make informed decisions on system upgrades, saving thousands of dollars on purchasing
and installing new network equipment that may not address the real problems.
Works with DOS & Windows
LANTest can be used to benchmark the performance of any DOS or Windows based workstation.
In the Windows module the software charts its results automatically for easy interpretation. When
benchmarking DOS, the results can be copied into Windows where graphs are formed to aid in the
interpretation of the data.
Documentation
LANTest is supplied with an on-line help system that contains detailed information on the setup
and use of the software. Information is also provided on-line to help identify and isolate
performance barriers on LANs and WANs.
