Microsoft VCache

With the release of WIN95 and the continued penetration of NT, Microsoft has upped the ante for disk and network caching. The latest versions of these operating systems sport high performance memory caching models for both read and write operations to the network and local hard disks. Shared LAN Cache does not compete with these new operating systems, rather, SLC sits on top of these new caching technologies and adds non-volatile and shared network caching.

Without Shared LAN Cache, Microsoft's caching technology is limited in size by existing RAM and also has to re-read data from the original source each time power is removed from the PC.
