Prior to the release of the Client 32 networking shells, Novell relied on their DOS TSRs to provide network support for Microsoft Windows clients. Both NETX and the VLM networking TSR shells had some buffering for sequential reads but did not include any caching of network drives.
Client 32 now provides native Windows support for both Windows 3.1/3.11 and Windows95 clients without the use of a TSR eliminating the legacy of memory management problems. The new NetWare Client 32 includes memory-based caching of network volumes and eliminates several problems MTI has found in its testing of the Microsofts Windows95 client. Novell does not have a non-volatile cache nor a method for sharing a cache over the network, two key components of MTIs Shared LAN Cache.
