Business Case for Shared LAN Cache
Enhances Productivity
Shared LAN Cache enhances productivity by reducing the time it
takes for PC users to access large files across LANs and WANs.
Application software, imaging, electronic faxes and other data
files are automatically cached, significantly improving access
times to these files.
Caching redundant read requests for data also off-loads the network
for other applications and users that require access to the existing
file servers. This improves network response time for users writing
data to the file servers further enhancing user productivity.
Saves Money
In addition to the savings realized through enhanced user productivity,
SLC also saves money by deferring the large capital expenditures
required to upgrade LANs and WANs. Wiring, file servers and workstation
hardware upgrades can be made over time as higher performance
technologies gradually become less expensive. SLC also extends
the life of the latest state-of-the-art LAN and WAN equipment
by using the enhanced bandwidth more efficiently.
Cost Effective Upgrade
SLC is the single most cost effective upgrade available to enhance
network performance. The cost of upgrading to SLC is only 10%
of the cost of upgrading network nodes to 100M. SLC also off-loads
existing file servers and improves WAN performance. Compared to
hardware upgrades which can take weeks and months to deploy, SLC
can be up and running on an entire network in less than an hour.
Upgrading network nodes to 100M technology without SLC adds an
extra load on the existing file servers and may negate
much of the performance gains sought by upgrading to 100M hardware.
Combining SLC with 100M technology allows users to achieve the
highest possible performance.
